Press Release – The 2Feet Project

DATE: Friday 5 November 2010

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Coventry singer-songwriter Rob Halligan is launching a new fundraising challenge in support of city charity Global Care later this month.

Rob – a long-time supporter of the charity – aims to raise £3,000 by July 2011 to fund the Two Feet Project (2FP) amongst poor communities supported by Global Care in Ethiopia.

2FP will provide funds for initiatives which help disadvantaged communities in the south west of the country ‘stand on their own two feet’, including micro-finance enterprises, equipment, education and training.

Rob explains: “Ethiopia is a poor country, and as we’ve seen in the news so often, it’s prone to drought and famine. When a famine hits, rural areas in particular have little resilience and children are among the most vulnerable to disease and malnutrition. The Two Feet Project is a fund which will enable vulnerable families to step out of the cycle of poverty and prepare for times like this – to help them stand on their own two feet and build a better future for their children.”

Rob will be raising money through CD sales and sponsored events. He will be launching 2FP at the first fund-raiser – a gig with 70-80s band After the Fire on Saturday 20th November, at the Jaguar Social Club, in Chorley Way, Radford, Coventry, doors opening at 7pm.

After the Fire’s keyboard player Pete ‘Memory’ Banks said: “It seems that vulnerable children are everywhere. In some countries, like Ethiopia, their plight is accentuated and After the Fire are delighted to be part of an event that draws attention to this.”

Paul Rowell, operations officer at Global Care, said: “We are delighted to have Rob and After the Fire on board to support us in our work in Ethiopia, where we are currently operating pre-schools in five communities helping some extremely disadvantaged children get a head-start in education. The new Two Feet Project will help us help these communities even more effectively in a variety of very practical, sustainable ways.”

After The Fire were originally well known back in the 70s and 80s, particularly for their monster hit “Der Kommissar”, when they toured the world with Queen, ELO and Van Halen. They reformed for occasional gigs and tours back in 2004 and the five-piece line-up includes two original members from their heyday – Pete Banks on keyboards and John Russell on guitar. Rob Halligan joined them as their lead singer in 2008.

Advance tickets cost £10 for adults (£12 on the door) or £6 for concessions, and are available from www.afterthefire.co.uk or from Jean Foss on 07724 062254

NOTES TO EDITORS:

Rob has previously raised money to support Global Care’s work in Bangladesh, culminating in a visit to Bangladesh to see the results of his fundraising in September 2009. Similarly, Rob hopes to visit Ethiopia in the summer of 2011.
