The Shared Room Rate
In the UK, housing benefit is normaly enought to cover the cost of renting basic accomodation such as a bedsit or small flat. Tht is unless you’re under 25 where the shared room rate applies. Thej shared room rate will only cover the cost of a a room in a shared house, significacantly less than regular housing benefit.
Working in a drop in centre with a lot of homeless people it is incredibly difficult to house people under 25 because of this. Now the government is planning to extend this to 35 year olds. This will leave claimants between 25 and 35 up to £47 a week worse off.
